Key Responsibilities
Provide Technical leadership to the Body Panels & Closures design engineers in collaboration with Project Engineers, Project Leads and the cross-functional teams.
Reporting to the Project Leader/EDC Manager, work on all aspects of Body Panels & Closures delivery on our future vehicle programmes.
Lead and mentor the design engineers and collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets:
*Component and system level packaging and concept studies including styling feasibility
*Work in collaboration with the Project Engineers to identify and specify design activity required
*Component and system design and detailing from prototype to production to internal and external design standards including GD&T
*DFMEA - Interpret DFMEA requirements for significant and critical characteristics and ensure the design satisfies these
*Engineering Release - Meet all defined engineering release dates. At engineering release all specifications will have been checked and met, weight and cost targets achieved, supplier DFM fully concurred, CAE output implemented, materials and finish defined, all fixings identified and positioned and all outstanding BCR's (Build Concern Reports) are embodied and documented at the point of release
*Weight - The Lead Design Engineer must ensure the design is weight efficient, weight targets are surpassed and the weight is documented accurately. This encompasses material selection and innovative design;
*Materials - The Lead Design Engineer should assist the Design Engineers and Project Engineer in specifying and controlling the materials of each component to meet vehicle spec book targets, technical specifications and all legal and component DVP requirements;
*DFM - Design for Manufacture is a fundamental requirement of the Lead Design Engineer role. They must have a demonstrable track record of working within a Design Team in harmony with suppliers.
Desired Skills and Experience
*Excellent Unigraphics/CATIA 2D/3D skills.
*Leadership and motivation in a design role is essential
*10+ years of previous experience of Design activities at OEM with a demonstrable record of delivery of the accountabilities;
*Experience with the following three systems
*Front Panels, Body side bonded, Body side Assembled, Bulkhead & Upper structure Doors
*Rear Panels, Engine Bay panels, Bonnet structure, hinge/latch/HW, Tailgate & Glazing
*Door Structure, Door hinge/latch etc, Tailgate/Engine Cover Structure, Closure seals, Active aero & Glazing
*A strong track record of delivering design to timing, weight and cost targets;
*Supplier liaison, comfortable with understanding and implementing DFM requirements within the project scope;
*Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above preferred;
*Background in low volume, high performance sports or racing cars preferred;
